About Garble

The reverse audio game

Garble plays you a phrase backwards. Copy the sounds, and Garble flips your take so you hear yourself say it the right way round. Then guess what it was.

What is Garble?

Garble is a word game you play with your voice. It takes the reverse audio challenge — say something backwards, flip the recording, and hear whether it comes out right — and turns it into a puzzle, with a new one every day.

Reversed speech sounds like nonsense. Copy those sounds closely enough, though, and when Garble reverses your take the hidden phrase comes out in your own voice. Working out what it says is the game.

How to play

  1. Listen. Hear the puzzle: a phrase, played backwards. Play it as often as you like.
  2. Say it back. Copy the sounds you heard, backwards and all. Garble flips your take, so you hear yourself say the phrase forwards. Not happy with it? Re-record.
  3. Guess. Type what you think the phrase is. Close counts.

The reveal then plays the original phrase and shows the answer.

Questions

Is it the reverse singing challenge?
It’s the same trick — copy reversed audio, flip it back and hear what comes out — with spoken phrases instead of songs, and a phrase to guess at the end. No singing needed.
Do I have to learn to speak backwards?
No. You only copy the sounds you hear, one take at a time. Garble does the reversing.
Do I need to download anything?
No. Garble plays in your browser. Allow the microphone when your browser asks.
Is my voice uploaded?
Your takes are recorded and reversed on your device. They’re only uploaded if you send one as a garble.
Something not working?
Help covers microphone problems, accounts and Garble Plus.
